Milano Design Film Festival Greece—Athens (Prelaunch mini-event series) at Athens Municipal Maker Space ( ΠΟΙΩ) | Screenings & Workshop

Learning by Watching. Learn.Make.Change. Make a Maker. Design in Film. New Technologies. Sustainability. Recycling. Upcycling. Creative Reuse. Circular Economy.
The Milano Design Film Festival Greece—Athens prelaunch week of mini-event series kicked off with a full day (divided in 3 groups) at the Athens Municipal Maker Space ( ΠΟΙΩ). A beautiful synergy with the 7th Art assuming an investigative, educative, informative, and engaging approach.

The curated film titles by MDFF Greece —Athens – “A Marwoolus Journey” by Jasmin Schröder, Emanuele Marzi, Italy 2015, 6’18”, Narrated by designer and inventor of the Marwoolus® material, Marco Guazzini, and “Jackie Chan’s Green Heroes” by David Hay, China/Taiwan 2018, 44′ starring founder of Miniwiz, Architect, Engineer and National Geographic‘s  Emerging Explorer, Arthur Huang along with action hero Jackie Chan, co-inventors of the “TRASHPRESSO.”

///ABOUT
A Marwoolus Journey, Jasmin Schröder, Emanuele Marzi Italy 2015, 6’18’’
A natural waterfall is the scene chosen in which to tell of the inspirational motives behind the birth of an unpublicized and innovative material, fruit of the creative mind of designer Marco Guazzini. Prato, city of the textile industry. Pietrasanta, city of marble. These are the two realities motivating him to experiment with a material of wool and marble, Marwoolus. Remnants from the manufacture of coloured wool are recycled, imprinted deep into white marble, leaving a symbolic and real pattern desired by Guazzini. The material and the ensuing work also speak for values of economical and ecological sustainability.
Jackie Chan’s Green Heroes , David Hay, China/Taiwan 2018, 44′
The famous Chinese actor Jackie Chan is joining forces with technological innovator and National Geographic Emerging Explorer, Arthur Huang. Together, they have invented the world’s first fully mobile plastics recycling machine – The Trashpresso, which can turn waste plastic into multi-use tiles on-site. Now, they’re on a mission to test it in one of the world’s harshest environments – the Tibetan Plateau. The film focuses on motivating younger generations to change the way humanity approaches environmental challenges such as plastic waste.
Learn.Make.Change Workshop
The workshop highlighted a dynamic, targeted DIY culture through the possibilities offered by a modern, open to the community Maker Space workshop, hosted by the Athens Municipal Maker Space. Through training in the use of new technologies (maker learning), individual empowermen,t perspectives are combined with opportunities for social activism in matters of sustainability (design thinking and creative reuse) aiming at a broader understanding and change of mentality in our environmental behavior. Participants had the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the digital equipment of the Maker Space like the laser cutters, the 3d printers and the CNC router. The workshop was run by the team of trained researchers from the TUC TIE Lab-Technical University of Crete, responsible for the Maker Space’s facilities. The workshop outcomes were a construction that resulted from combining the participants’ individual work.
The workshop is currently operated by the TUC TIE Lab scientific team from the Technical University of Crete with the support of DAEM, the City of Athens IT Company

Athens Municipal Maker Space

The Athens Municipal Maker Space is a state-of-the-art open laboratory, equipped with innovative design and fabrication technologies, that actively works as an incubator and a facilitator for technological and social innovation in Athens, Greece. It supports a variety of activities that target. In this context, the Athens Municipal Maker Space offers free access to advanced digital fabrication equipment and moreover it offers free, lifelong education programs on digital design and fabrication to help people from a variety of backgrounds to cultivate and enhance the necessary maker skills. The equipment list includes CO2 Laser Cutters, FDM and SLA 3D Printers, a Vinyl Cutter, a 3-axis CNC Router and assorted hand and power tools. Furthermore, the lab offers modern technological applications that go beyond the computer screen, such as robotic applications, haptic interfaces, interactive projections, virtual reality headsets, electronic invention tools and toys. It is currently operated by the TUC TIE Lab scientific team from the Technical University of Crete with the support of DAEM, the City of Athens IT Company. TUC TIE Lab – TRANSFORMABLE INTELLIGENT ENVIRONMENTS LABORATORY

The Transformable Intelligent Environments Laboratory (TUC TIE Lab) at the School of Architecture in the Technical University of Crete was founded in 2012 on the basis of researching, developing and applying methodologies and practices that target the qualitative upgrade, efficiency and sustainability of a variety of environments, including learning spaces and play- scapes, health environments, technologically-augmented habitable extreme environments, cultural spaces and projection mapping installations, sustainable approaches with natural building systems as well as smart materials and spatial augmented reality systems. It employs interdisciplinary research approaches and participatory design techniques to explore flexibility, adaptability and transformability in space through analogue, digital and hybrid mediums. Buildings, spaces, equipment and materials are treated as platforms with a dynamic spatial imprint upon which the TUC TIE Lab scientific team and researchers explore the optimal intervention in order to respond to human activity, need and wish. The laboratory is fully equipped with all the necessary technology to perform its research, including projection systems, robotic hardware, drones, VR sets, gestural interface devices, EEG portable devices, and has the ability to design, simulate and fabricate functional prototypes and real-life applications of nearly everything with CNC machines, laser cutters and 3d-printers. Its projects are also being supplemented by the other TUC labs. The lab has made its international mark in the academic and research community through many interdisciplinary conferences and publications, as well as through national and international exhibitions and awards by presenting its 57, so far, research projects.

TUC – Technical University of Crete
